Breathe {inspiration for Wednesdays}

I have a sticker on my back windshield that says "LOVE WINS". I believe that to the core of my being...although it is a much harder thing put into practice!

During this political campaign season, however, you would think just the opposite. I have seen more slanderous and attacking ads than I ever have and listening to them just makes me cringe. Sure I know a lot about what each candidate is against, but I know little about what they are for. It is far easier to attack someone else than really lay out what you actually believe and are striving to live out.

The problem, as I see it (with my limited vision), is that when we define ourselves by what we are against, we come at life with a "fighting" attitude. Everyone and everything becomes an enemy of sorts that we are willing to battle when we see how they are different than us. We tend to have an "us versus them" attitude....heck, forget the "us" and "them", we just have an all around "versus" perspective. We are always looking for a fight and when that happens, love cannot win. And I wish I could say that this only happens in the political arena, but alas...it happens all around us, doesn't it? We find the differences in our neighbors, we come against our spouses and our kids, and, if we are really honest, we sometimes find a pervasive fighting attitude deep within our hearts. Ouch....I told you that "Love Wins" is much harder to practice than to say!

But what if we began to experiment with the idea that "Love Wins"? How would my life look differently if I lived out of the idea that:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast. It is not proud, it is not rude. It is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (I Corinthians 13)

Can you imagine how different the political ads on TV would be if we began to really believe that?? I am laughing just thinking about it!! But then I sober up thinking...can I imagine how different my life and relationships would be if I kept that ever before me and practiced it consistently? (And if you are not particularly inclined toward the bible, how about the Ghandi quote, "Whenever you are confronted with an opponent, conquer him with love.")

Obviously I am never going to be a politician! But that's OK....because maybe they are not the ones who actually change the world!! Maybe those who have the audacity to believe that LOVE WINS do .

Breathe, smile and go slowly.
